How Can Anyone Have It All Figured Out When No-one Knows What's Going To Happen
It's the first time in history where the speed of change is much quicker than the speed it takes to master that change.
Everything is changing, much quicker than anyone person can say, ‘oh, yeah, I know where it’s going, follow me.’
Banks are set to collapse. School systems, health systems, and governments require a radical change. The way we grow food and think about water is massively needing to change. And the way we can earn money has turned the employment game on its head.
Even the way we heal ourselves and how we are thinking about health is making us see that we can prevent illness and disease instead of reacting to it.
Everything is flipping itself upside down. And that’s because the speed at which knowledge is available to us nowadays is almost instantaneous.
The 9–5 job all of a sudden feels very outdated, and far less desired than ever before.
Everything has changed or is changing. So rapidly in fact that how can anyone know where it’s going?
It seems that the people who accept this are going to be the ones who ride all the different waves that are ebbing and flowing at the moment.
In My Lifetime
Even in my lifetime, there has been a massive shift in how the world operates and there are now things that certainly couldn’t have been taught in schools, or even at universities for that matter, as they simply didn’t exist.
And I’m only 30!
I’m talking 20 years ago, 15 years ago; even as recently as 10 years ago.
The internet, social media, and cryptocurrency have changed the game entirely. What could the next 20 years bring?
No-one knows.
With the speed of development through AI, no one knows, so how can anyone be sure? And with such uncertainty, how can anyone have it all figured out? For someone to have it all figured out, it has to have existed. If it doesn’t exist, the infinite realm of possibility exists instead. That’s where we find ourselves today.
This either brings excitement to create or fear of the unknown. Which one we feed will ultimately guide our journey ahead.
Infinite Possibilities
The old paradigm is shifting. The new one is taking form. The speed at which people rise and fall has never been quicker. To keep a finger on the pulse of what’s new it’s important to constantly adapt, to change, to try and test try new ideas, new platforms, new ways of engaging with the material, and the new ways of engaging with the people that discover that material.
There are already systems in place that are decentralizing the whole system as we speak. These platforms are bringing the consumer and the manufacture into direct contact; bringing the listener to the musician; the reader to the author and connecting our food source to the farmers that grew it, all through blockchain technology which is spreading and distributing wealth more evenly.
So, if you’re aspiring to become a writer but haven’t made an indent yet, the chance to do so through a new platform or a new way to publish could be as early as tomorrow.
If you’re looking to go into higher education, university degrees have far less weight to them than they ever used to have. Even lesser still when compared to gaining experience in the chosen field of inquiry.
So, which way to go?
There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of online courses nowadays to gain knowledge who connect us to teachers and their communities directly and these teachers can teach us anything and everything that we need to know, all in our own time.
I’m not suggesting that this is the correct way to go, all I’m seeing is that the need to go the traditional route for anything right now is dead, or certainly dying.
The Past
In the past, if we wanted to attain a new skill we could either go to school, college, university or find an apprenticeship that would train us for a possible position in that field after the years it took to get the skills or qualification(s) needed. Then we would start to build a career with our path ahead set.
This model is based on a top-down learning model where knowledge is kept secretive until, and only if, the student is ready. This model is becoming more and more obsolete, and far less desired.
Wanting Recognition
The desire to be seen, witnessed, and acknowledged is often the driving force behind our creative output. We all believe we have a voice and we all believe that we’re here to share our story, even if that’s hard to admit sometimes.
What this new paradigm has brought is the opportunity to break away from traditional methods and instead, put the power right back into the hands of the creators.
If someone wants to become a photographer for example, instead of waiting for a publication/magazine/newspaper or agency to approve their work, they can grab their camera, take a photo, upload it to platforms like Instagram and Facebook (or even platforms such as Unsplash) and gain a following for their efforts.
The speed at which recognition comes is a wonderful by-product of this new paradigm.
If someone wants to become a videographer, YouTube is king. All they simply have to do is to record themselves on video, upload it and if it's of interest to anyone (which how can it not be for at least someone on Youtube?), they can also gain a following.
If someone wants to become an author, self-publishing has eliminated the grueling procedure of sending multiple, if not hundreds, of cover letters to publishers who most, at best, give a no to such a letter and at worse, say nothing at all. Self-publishing has made becoming an author a tangible option and put the creative power back into the hands of the creator.
Quality work still determines who gets recognized, but for the first time quality is judged by the individual who releases the work and not the selective agencies behind it. If enough individuals then enjoy that piece of work, that person becomes a ‘success’.
This is a time for keeping our eyes open, for keeping an open mind that the unknown, the unmanifested is being formed and could be the next big break if we stay open enough to the possibility that we just don’t know, but are willing to try.
Here’s to your excitement at becoming the creator of your own life.
