There’s a philosophy I swear by and it goes like this:
Life is just a series of moments in a row. If I have enough good moments I end up having a good life.
I came to this realisation because I used to get lost in what was to come and missed everything that was already here.
I found that trying to plan my perfect life was overwhelming. There were too many unknowns and bumps along the way that were completely out of my control. However, planning for a good moment is a lot easier because it’s more manageable. I know what makes me happy so I just have to focus on all the little things that fill me up.
“Changes that seem small and unimportant at first will compound into remarkable results if you're willing to stick with them for years.” (James Clear)
It’s the same with each moment.
If each moment is filled with things that give life meaning, they very quickly compound into a remarkable life.
This is even more important as we age because a recent study found that adult brains “receive fewer images than it was trained to receive when young.” So, it often feels like time is going quicker.
In short: the older we get, the faster it feels.
The image below shows how time seems to speed up with age perfectly.
As much as I’ve found this to be true, the best remedy for slowing things down is to bring my awareness into the present moment. Each moment exists within an infinite vacuum that fills time and space. When I exist within that vacuum time seems to do the opposite: it expands.
Some of my favourite ways to do this are through meditation, breathwork, and spending time in nature.
What do you do to come into the present moment?
Hello, Andy Murphy.
It’s simple but that’s why like it as well. I use to put things down. Now I put things away. This was a simple change for me. I’m used to it now. What a time saver. Plus, a bonus, less stress.
As for slowing down. I’m fortunate enough to live at a place where I can enjoy the sunset. This has not always been the case. As the sunset time approaches I get ready to stop what I am doing & enjoy the sky show. The whole show may go on longer than I can stop for. No worries. I can see a lot of the after glow from my windows.
Thanks for asking. Hugs, HELENLOUISE J.
