Confucius once said: “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”
So, today, I want to offer up a different perspective to what much of the modern world demands from us.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the modern world with all of its new shiny objects, information available at the click of a button, and the abundance of opportunities, but it can be overwhelming at times.
So, whenever things get too much, I often turn to the greats for advice. What I find almost everywhere I look is the same: less is more.
“Manifest plainness,
Embrace simplicity,
Reduce selfishness,
Have few desires.”
- Lao Tzu
In other words - live a simple life and serve others.
This is very different than what the modern world recommends but it’s a great option for long-term happiness and peace.
In my own small way, my version of a simple life looks like tending to my vegetable garden, playing with my cat, going for nice long walks with my girlfriend, practicing my daily breathwork routine, and sharing food with loved ones.
My way of serving the world is by writing from my heart.
What are some of yours?
“Simple pleasures are the last healthy refuge in a complex world” - Oscar Wilde
Closing thoughts
Even if our lives can’t be as simple as I make them out to be here, how we move through them can be.
So our version of manifesting plainness, embracing simplicity, reducing selfishness, and having few desires could be the simple act of moving through life with presence, authenticity, and a curious heart.
The world has changed a great deal since Lao Tzu was around but the same timeless principles apply.
Another one is this:
“Not all of us can do great things but we can all do small things with great love” - Mother Teresa
Love this Andy! I think we can simplify if we are intentional about our attention. That allows us to prioritize what lives in our heart and not be battered around on the whims of others.
